About Us
Vision
AlterNatives' mission has always been to explore alternatives models of trade in the belief that the market can be a source of life and happiness. While being critical of the injustice and exploitation that has been the legacy of international trade in Guatemala, we have a belief that the market is comprised of human relations. Therefore, the market is not the problem; rather, it is reflection of the values and vision of those who are bound together through economic exchanges.
We believe that by promoting different values and vision in trade relationships, we can foster a market place that responds to the aspirations and needs of producers as well as consumers. The foundation of our economic principals is that the market place is a sacred web of relationships that is the manifestation of our hearts.
We believe that it is our ability to cooperate rather than compete allows our species to thrive. The problem with the market place is not that exchange is bad; rather, it is that our vision has been clouded by greed. The response is not to live in an illusion where work is bad and making money is evil. Money can be sacred. Money feeds our children, provides us with health care and education and may even allow us to throw a really good party.
Therefore, it is our vision that we should endeavor to act in the market place with the same respect and tolerance we would show each other on Christmas, Ramadan or Yom Kippur. That in the end, the benefit or devastation derived from the market place is just a reflection of our souls.
